PROGRESSIVE WALL PHOTOS
This “HYDROPONIC” Living Wall Tapestry is a (18ft tall x 24ft long) modular system that incorporates 2,640 plants. Each module is approximately 24” x 18” x 3.5”, and are easily linked to each other. It has a fully enclosed internal drip irrigation system, supplied by a REMOTE “MICRO DRIP” IRRIGATION CONTROL UNIT. It uses “METAL HALIDE” Track Lighting, with a STAINLESS STEEL SURROUND.
WHAT IS HYDROPONICS?
Hydroponics is the art of growing plant material using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, but without soil.
Our Hydroponic system uses “Rock-wool” which is manufactured from volcanic rock, crushed and then spun into a wool like medium for planting.
REMOTE, MICRO DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM
All of our Living Wall Art Systems have internal “Drip Irrigation Tubes” which are fed by an external, low-pressure regulated, “Micro Drip” control units. The water supply is on a timer, and the timers and number of zones vary with the size of the system. The irrigation unit can be directly tied into a waste line, or can have a recycling feature.
An additional function of the Remote Irrigation Control Unit is to systematically inject Liquid fertilizers and Innoculants into the water supply.
FUNCTIONALITY OF LIGHTING
Natural sunlight is optional when it comes to Vertical Plant Walls. Living Wall Art is comprised of living organisms, therefor a bright sunny area is always a plus, but not mandatory. We have an endless array of Low-Light, Medium-Light, and High-Light plants to satisfy your uniqueness, your creative mind, and your colorful pallet.
HID Horticultural Grow Lights are the preferred light to use as a primary source, if little or no natural sunlight is available. HID Horticultural Grow Lights successfully mimic the light output a plant would receive in a greenhouse, or from natural outdoor sunlight.
HID or High Intensity Discharge grow lights are the most economical and efficient way of converting electric into light. They can be installed anywhere in a home or office, run on regular 120 volt current, but do require special light fixtures.
There are two categories of HID Lighting; Metal Halide (MH) and High-Pressure Sodium (HPS). Both emit a much more intense light than fluorescent bulbs. Both MH and HPS bulbs have specific color rendering properties causing more of the light emitted to be used by the plant, with less heat byproduct.
The track lighting system designed for the above Living Wall uses 16 MH bulbs. The leafy, green plant assortment in the Wall will perform best with Metal Halide light because MH bulbs produce an abundance of light in the blue spectrum. The blue-purple colors of the light spectrum specifically promote overall green leafy growth, while keeping the plant compact.
High-Pressure Sodium bulbs emit light strong at the red-orange end of the light spectrum. HPS bulbs specifically promote flowering. However, HPS lighting should be used together with daylight or metal halide bulbs because HPS bulbs by themselves produce leggy, undesirable plant growth.
The above Living Wall was designed with a contemporary Stainless Steel Surround. There is also a rich assortment of Wood Surrounds available. Both metal and wood frames can be bolted directly to a wall, or Free Standing, on a suitable surface.
